About the Instructor:
Rita Kirkman, PSA-MP, CPS, IAPS-EP
Rita Kirkman was born an artist. She has been using pastel since she was 11 years old and had her first paid portrait commission when still a teenager. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1988. Meanwhile, in 1986 she began a 12 year career sketching quick portraits at amusement parks, and in 1988 she began a business drawing detailed pencil portraits from client photos.
Since 2003, Kirkman has improved her own style and technique with pastel through independent study and workshops with renowned artists each year. This effort has been consistently rewarded with major awards in national and international competitions. Her work has been featured in the Pastel Journal and the Pratique des Arts Spécial Pastel, and published in many others. She is a Pastel Society of America Master Pastelist and an Eminent Pastelist with the International Association of Pastel Societies. Her portraits and paintings are in private collections all over the world, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan, Africa and Australia.
In 2011, Kirkman took a workshop with internationally known daily painter Carol Marine, which had an incredible impact on her career. Painting small and posting frequently improved Kirkman's work and expanded her name and artwork recognition thoughout the pastel world. She has since become a popular workshop instructor. At the heart of her teaching is recognizing value and temperature over color, simplifying and strengthening composition, and of course the benefits of painting small.
Kirkman's latest venture, in 2020, has been to create a Patreon Page, where she shares behind-the-scenes video clips and exclusive content from the studio, along with demo videos and Paint-Alongs from her Virtual Open Studio Days and various other art tips from her 40+ years as an artist.

Explore the exciting possibilities of creating beautiful artwork in colored pencil with award-winning artist Jesse Lane.
This workshop is an introduction to colored pencil as a fine-art medium, capable of so much more than scribbles of color! All skill levels are welcome. “Many people think colored pencils are for children,” Jesse says. “But colored pencils can create exquisite artwork in stunning detail. I’m excited to share the wonders of this versatile medium. There’s a layering process to colored pencils that elevates them to a form of fine art. It’s a very relaxing medium and fun to get lost in the surface textures of each piece. It lends itself well to detail.” Jesse is a gifted instructor. Students love his warm, friendly manner and clear, step-bystep instruction. Jesse will demo throughout the day and also work with each student one-on-one. Students will learn how to layer and blend in colored pencil, techniques for texture, the secrets to skin tone and how to create color within color. About the Instructor:
Jesse Lane (b. 1990) has been called a pioneer. In stunning photorealism, he transcends drawing into painting.
“I’m always looking for the easily missed moments of everyday life. I work to design and capture an instant of emotion,” Jesse says. “Every image I create has a story. My stories share moments of intimacy, private moments. If you feel the story, I’m satisfied.”
Jesse discovered art while struggling in school with the challenges of dyslexia. “Growing up, I often felt alone,” Jesse says. “I desperately wanted to find a place in life where I didn’t feel inferior. For years, I bottled up my feelings. Then I realized they could be a source of inspiration. I began creating images of personal struggle and intimate emotion.”
Jesse’s honors include the “Pioneer of Realism” Award from the International Guild of Realism. He also won the world’s top award for colored pencil from the Colored Pencil Society of America, as well as honors from the Salmagundi Club, the American Artist’s Professional League, International Artist magazine and many others.
Publications include Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, International Artist, Professional Artist, Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art, The Washington Post, and Huffington Post.
Jesse’s artwork is popular on social media, with more than 7,000 followers on Facebook and more than 17,000 on Instagram.
A graduate of Texas A&M University, Jesse also studied art in Italy. In 2021, he was honored to join the faculty at the Realism Live Convention.
