Class Description:
Modern calligraphy, using a pointed pen, creates a graceful slanted script, which instantly elevates any quote, envelope, gift tag, place card or handwritten letter. In contrast to the precision of traditional calligraphy, modern calligraphy allows for creativity, unique styles, and freedom of expression.
This class will teach you what you need to get started successfully. Although plenty of practice will be needed to make your calligraphy smooth and free-flowing, Karen will teach you the basic techniques to help you achieve the graceful thick-and-thin curves which characterize this lovely art form. The supply kit, included in your class fee, provides the proper ink, pen, and paper combination to maximize your success. Karen will teach you how to mindfully form your pen strokes and letters and to evaluate your own progress so that you can improve quickly without mindlessly copying page after page of repeated letters.
In a world increasingly overtaken by artificial intelligence, modern calligraphy will lend a personal, handmade touch to anything you choose to write, while providing a soothing and therapeutic way to relax as you create something beautiful.
Our class will meet for two hours in the morning, break for an hour lunch, and resume for two hours in the afternoon.
About the Instructor:
Karen Shirer, a former Rockport resident now living in Missouri, is spending this winter in the Coastal Bend. Her earliest memories include a love of all things related to pen and paper. After taking her first calligraphy class 27 years ago, she has immersed herself in drawing and lettering styles which appear in her card-making, mixed media projects, watercolor, letter writing, and Zentangle (she is a twice-Certified Zentangle Teacher, or CZT).
Karen’s greatest joy is sharing with others the delight she finds in musical and artistic pursuits. A seasoned teacher, she is patient, intuitive, and able to help students find the best way to create using their natural individual strengths.
