Finding Ones Way with Coiled Sculpture

Course Description
In this workshop, students will be able to pursue coil construction as a means of making larger sculpture and vessel forms. This time-honored method provides development at a controllable and steady pace. Special emphasis will be placed on methods for taking full advantage of the freedom inherent in this method. Students should bring their own basic clay working tools. Options for using specialized tools, some from household items, will be explored. Some, more specialized tools will be provided. One bag of clay will be included.
About the Instructor
Stan Irvin received his MFA in Ceramics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1974. He recently moved his studio from Austin to Rockport after a 38 year career of teaching ceramics and sculpture at St. Edward's University in Austin.
He specializes in altered wheel-thrown vessel forms and more recently printing on clay. Stan's work can be seen at Windway Gallery in Rockport, Austin Pottery Studio and Gallery in Austin, at the Texas Clay Festival held annually in Gruene, Texas., and at his studio/gallery in down town Rockport, Texas.
In addition to shows, Stan teaches a variety of clay workshops. Past awards include Best of Show at the Greater Austin Clay Arts Association and first place in the Texas Teapot Tournament. More recently he received Honorable Mention in the 2022 Rockport Center For The Arts Members Show. His work has been included in numerous state and national juried competitions, as well as the Art of the Pot studio tour in Austin.
