Watercolor Impressions- How to Create Luminous Watercolors

Class Description:

Day 1: FOUNDATIONS OF LUMINOUS WATERColor

Morning:

  • Introduction, materials overview (papers, brushes, paints)

  • Demonstration: Mixing clean, transparent washes and a 3 stage approach to painting waterfcolor.  

  • Techniques: Wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, gradations, glazing for luminosity.  How to create atmospheric paintings with depth.  

  • Understanding a painting tonal values and how they are painted in watercolor.  Light studies using a simple object to paint describing transparent washes and how to create form shadows.  Defining shadow types .  

Afternoon:

  • Exercise: Layering washes - Paint Along Demonstration in Atmospheric painting and 3 stage approach to painting.  

  • Practicum:  Brush Techniques in  watercolor painting (Paint Along Demo)

  • Group Review & Q&A

Day 2: Capturing Light and Color

Morning:

  • Color theory for luminosity (warm vs cool, complementary contrasts)

  • Demonstration:  How to compose and design a watercolor painting. Demo in preserving whites, reserving highlights  in First (negative painting), Creating contrast and the focal area in the 2nd wash and detailing the finished painting. 

Afternoon:

  • Exercise Demo with Paint Along:  Reinforcing color theory and unification in a painting.  

  • Workshop Techniques:  Advanced techniques in creating textures and brush techniques in watercolor.  Exploring variation in edges in watercolor.  

  • Peer Feedback Session

Day 3: Advanced Luminous & Textural Effects & Personal Project

Morning:

  • Demo: Soft edges, backruns, blooms, and controlled diffusions and letting watercolor paint itself (Dog Portrait Demonstration)

  • Special topics: Integrating the entire process to create atmospheric depth, transparent shadows, and focal areas that convey a sense of feeling in your paintings.

Afternoon:

  • Personal Project: Paint a subject of your choice.  

  • One-on-one critiques and troubleshooting

  • Final group critique, tips for framing and exhibiting watercolors

About the Instructor:

Al Kline is the President of the Watercolor Society of South Texas (WSSTX.ORG).  

He was born in Holland to Dutch parents.  He moved to the United States as a young child.  He showed interest in art including watercolor at a young age. He spent the majority of his working life providing medicine and surgical services to his community for the past 30 years.  

In 2017, he re-discovered the art of drawing and watercolor and was voted as president of the Watercolor Society of South Texas in 2018.  

In 2020, he began to focus more on teaching watercolor for the Watercolor Society of South Texas, which has a rich history of promoting watercolor art in South Texas for the past 50 years.  

Through teaching, and now online instruction, he has gained international recognition as a watercolor artist.  He has won numerous awards in both local and state-wide shows.
