Susie Black is a lifelong fifth-generation resident of Aransas County.
She worked in the family lumber and hardware business on a regular basis starting at age 10, full-time beginning in 1971. She and her brother Bryan purchased the business in 1989, tripling sales, staff and territory served. Susie served as President of Bracht Lumber Co. from 1989-2006.
A groundbreaker for women in the hardware industry, Susie served on advisory boards and committees for several hardware industry suppliers and was the first female board member of an eight-state hardware cooperative buying group based in Houston. She was named to the Outstanding Young Women of America in 1986 and Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals in 1996.
Susie has served as a bank board member beginning with First National Bank of Rockport in 1985 and is still an active director of IBC Bank, coming up on her 30th year of service.
In our community, she has volunteered her time and talents for numerous organizations, even self-publishing a Recipes and Remembrances cookbook, raising $6,500 for Rockport-Fulton Good Samaritans. She has served as a board member for Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce (1985-1990), including a term as president (1988-89); director for Rockport-Fulton Area Economic Development Co. (1987-91); board member of Rockport-Fulton Good Samaritans (1991-92); board member of Texas Maritime Museum (1983-93), including two terms as president (1991-93), and board member of The Margaret Sue Rust Foundation since 2006, serving as its president since 2010. She was also an Aransas County Advisory Director for two terms on the Coastal Bend Community Foundation.
Susie has been both a stylist and emcee for style shows since the 1980s — ABC School, Aim Hospice, and five years for The Humane Society. In addition to the style shows, she has most enjoyed volunteering for Odyssey After School, where she was the “Sewing and Crafts Lady,” and fundraising for capital campaigns, including the Texas Maritime Museum, Aim Hospice, and ABC Learning Center. She also served as chair for the Aransas County EMS building capital campaign, earning her recognition as Rockport-Fulton Chamber Citizen of the Year in 2008.
Susie has been married to her husband, Clayton, for 30 years and is so grateful to live close to family and friends in the community she loves.
