Course Description
In this course you will learn to mix all your colors, grays, and values. We will spend a few days just mixing and matching colors and then will use them painting still lifes. This is “indoor plein air”! Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. I will demonstrate in oil paint.
If possible, purchase artist or professional grade oil paint. Student grade is cheaper but has less pigment and is difficult to achieve the rich colors. I buy mostly online from Jerry’s Artarama. I have used a lot of brands of paint but finally settled on Gamblin oil paints. Good quality pigments, great customer service.
PAINT:
Ultramarine Blue
Cerulean Blue
Cadmium Red Light
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Titanium White
Chromatic Black
We will work with these colors and maybe later on add Transparent Earth Red and Transparent Orange.
I mostly use Gamblin paints, but any brand will do.
ALSO:
OMS (Odorless Mineral Spirits) Gamblin makes a good one called Gamsol.
Jar to put it in
BRUSHES:
Good quality bristle flats and or filberts # 4, #6, #8,#10. Natural hog bristle, or synthetic.
A medium size palette knife
Good paper towels
Retractable razor blade for cleaning your palette, unless you are using a paper palette. I always bring butcher paper for anyone who doesn’t have something to put their paint on.
Canvas panels or stretched canvas. 9x2 or 11x14. You will need 3 or 4 for color samples.
There are also inexpensive canvas pads. I know one artist who uses gesso on her paper sketchbook pages so she can use them for oil sketches in the field.
You will need 5 or 6 for color samples.
Watch for sales at Hobby Lobby. Every few weeks they put canvas and brushes on sale.
Sketchbook, pencil and pens.
This is a low key, relaxed, fun class. I look forward to working with you.
