Lisa Baer Frederick - Painter

Lisa is a local Rockport Artist who owned & directed Estelle Stair Gallery from 1996-2020. She & her husband, John Paul restored the Gallery space & received a Registered Historical Landmark designation in 2008. She sold the building in 2020, and it now houses The Coastal Mercantile. Her appreciation for art started when she was very young, fostered by her Aunt Estelle Stair and other local artists. She went on to study art at Sam Houston State University and graduated in 1980. She has been a supporter of the local arts in several capacities; artist, patron, donor and has served on the board of the Rockport Center for the Arts along with serving on several committees over the years. She was featured as Master Artist in 2009 and was awarded a one woman show during the July 4th Annual Art Festival. Her paintings are bright and colorful but also have depth and sense of abstraction which comes from the process of her work where one image is layered on top of another with a mixed media method.

Lisa says “making art is a soulful expression. Each hunch I follow, every color I select, and each stroke of the brush allows my soul to speak. I aim to create from an inner space that holds my feelings and emotions, and above all, I trust my intuition throughout the process.”

“I don’t begin a painting with a fixed plan. Instead, I start with free, spontaneous strokes—moving my brush or other tools over and around the surface to create loose, instinctive marks. This unstructured beginning is incredibly freeing and opens the door to unexpected discoveries.”

“From there, I begin to loosely define shapes and images using a layering technique with mixed media. I build up and break down the surface, adding and subtracting layers until the composition begins to excite me—when the interplay of imagery and color starts to feel alive. This layered approach allows me to explore depth, emotion, and movement within the piece.”

“Painting in this way helps me express what I often find difficult to put into words. The process is both emotional and intuitive, and the finished work often speaks back to me on a deeply personal level.”

Lisa currently exhibits her work in Rockport at Anita Diebel Gallery at 1102 Wharf St in downtown Rockport Cultural Art District.
