Work by the Don Hazlitt

Kress Works showcases Hazlitt’s attempt to explore numerous artistic movements of the 20th century he believes can be gleaned further, bringing them into the post-post-modernist era. Many of the Kress Works paintings pay homage to cubism using a semi-cubist style and formal compositional structure.

“On a personal level, these small scale paintings often refer back to my earlier bas-relief painted constructions, cycling such images as rats, rocks, stuffed animal ears, potatoes, stone walls, and lumpy-bumpy biomorphic bulbous, phallic shapes, all giving the viewer a hint into the silly-humorous intension of these works,” said Hazlitt. “So, don’t get too serious while looking at the works in this exhibition or you’ll miss the point of these joyful playful paintings.”

Born in Stockton, Calif., Hazlitt earned his Master of Art degree in 1973 from California State University in Sacramento, as well Master of Fine Arts degree from Vermont College, Union Institute & University in 2007. Over the course of his lengthy career, he has served as a professor and chair of the MFA program for Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y., appeared in publications and as a guest lecturer, and has participated in hundreds of group and solo exhibitions, both domestic and international, including solo exhibitions at the Musée de Toulon in France, the Rosa Esman and Andre Zarre galleries in New York, and Galerie Pierre Huber in Geneva. Hazlitt’s work can also be found in numerous public and private collections around the world, including the Butler Art Institute, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
