About the Class:

Join artist Omar González for an engaging introduction to relief printmaking. This workshop will guide participants through the fundamentals of the printmaking process, with a focus on relief methods. Students will learn about essential tools and materials, explore core carving and inking techniques, and gain hands-on experience creating their own prints. The class will also cover the process of developing and printing an edition, offering participants a strong foundation in both the creative and technical aspects of relief printmaking. Ideal for beginners and those looking to deepen their understanding of printmaking practices.

What you will learn:

● Understanding of the basics of relief printmaking and its creative process

● Familiarity with key tools, materials, and safety practices used in relief printing

● Experience with carving, inking, and printing techniques

● Knowledge of how to plan, print, and organize a small edition

● Greater confidence in translating an image into a carved print design

● Appreciation for the craftsmanship and possibilities of printmaking

● A finished print or small edition to take home

What you should bring to the workshop:

● An 8” x 10” design that will be transferred to a block for carving

● Ballpoint pen

Day 1:

● Introductions

● Overview

● Transferring a key image and staining a block

● How to use a linocutter

Day 2:

● Setting up a press

● Inking a matrix

● Creating an edition

● Different ways to add color

About the Instructor:

Omar González is an Assistant Professor in the Art, Communication, and Theatre Department at Texas A&M University–Kingsville and resides in Rockport, TX. 

Omar is a multidisciplinary artist who earned his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2020. He previously received a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas A&M University–Kingsville in 2009 and 2014, respectively. 

His work is held in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago, IL), Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin, TX), Zuckerman Museum of Art (Kennesaw, GA), Mexican American Studies Institute (Kingsville, TX), and Del Mar College (Corpus Christi, TX). González has exhibited across the United States and has work collected in Canada, France, Germany, China, Thailand, and Australia.
