Course Description
In this workshop the focus will be on the following surface decoration techniques.
sgraffito
mishima
inlay
relief carving
All of these techniques rely on carving tools so we will spend some time making our own small hand tools. Materials for this will be provided for those who wish to make their own tools using simple hand tools and readily available materials.
Workshop attendees are asked to have at least one leather hard or bone dry form to decorate. The surface should be smooth in preparation for surface carving. Some pre made forms will also be available for students to decorate.
Tool List:
1. Typical wheel throwing tools; bucket, sponge, potters’ knife, needle tool,
sponge, metal ribs (with and without teeth), wire cutter.
2. Sure Form tool (small rasp typically used for sheet rock but also excellent
for clay work)
3. Kemper LD-5 ribbon loop tool (typical tool used for trimming bottoms of
wheel thrown pots)
4. Kemper #4 ribbon tool (typical tool used for trimming bottoms of
wheel thrown pots)
5. Kemper D2 wire loop tool (for more detail carving)
6. Kemper W22 or W24 small wire loop tool for carving approximately 1/8" wide lines.
About the Instructor
Stan Irvin received his MFA in Ceramics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1974. He recently moved his studio from Austin to Rockport after a 38 year career of teaching ceramics and sculpture at St. Edward's University in Austin.
He specializes in altered wheel-thrown vessel forms and more recently printing on clay. Stan's work can be seen at Windway Gallery in Rockport, Austin Pottery Studio and Gallery in Austin, at the Texas Clay Festival held annually in Gruene, Texas., and at his studio/gallery in down town Rockport, Texas.
In addition to shows, Stan teaches a variety of clay workshops. Past awards include Best of Show at the Greater Austin Clay Arts Association and first place in the Texas Teapot Tournament. More recently he received Honorable Mention in the 2022 Rockport Center For The Arts Members Show. His work has been included in numerous state and national juried competitions, as well as the Art of the Pot studio tour in Austin.
