Course Description

The Big Idea

Large Clay Sculpture with Stan Irvin

In this hands-on workshop with Stan Irvin, students will be challenged to work on a larger scale than they might typically. Both the potters’ wheel and hand building techniques will be utilized with a primary focus on large clay sculpture. Various hollow forming techniques such as building in stages and sectional construction will be demonstrated as well as other means of working large when limited to a small kiln.

There will also be an optional half day follow up session to discuss final completion of sculptures and options for further color and surface development.


TOOL AND MATERIAL LIST

Some specialized carving and sculpting tools will be on hand so don't worry if you do not have all of these.  Typical low cost clay working tools that can be purchased in a kit that likely will include the following.

 1.  Potters knife

2.  Flexible metal rib

3.  Flexible metal rib with teeth

4.  Sponge

5.  Wooden modeling tools

6.  Steel loop tools for modeling and hollowing out 

7.  One gallon bucket for tools and cleanup

 Clay must be purchased through Rockport Center For The Arts.  Price includes firing and other materials utilized in the workshop.


About the Instructor

Stan Irvin received his MFA in Ceramics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1974.  He recently moved his studio from Austin to Rockport after a 38 year career of teaching ceramics and sculpture at St. Edward's University in Austin.

He specializes in altered wheel-thrown vessel forms and more recently printing on clay. Stan's work can be seen at Windway Gallery in Rockport, Austin Pottery Studio and Gallery in Austin, at the Texas Clay Festival held annually in Gruene, Texas., and at his studio/gallery in down town Rockport, Texas. 

 In addition to shows, Stan teaches a variety of clay workshops. Past awards include Best of Show at the Greater Austin Clay Arts Association and first place in the Texas Teapot Tournament.  More recently he received Honorable Mention in the 2022 Rockport Center For The Arts Members Show. His work has been included in numerous state and national juried competitions, as well as the Art of the Pot studio tour in Austin.
