Workshop Description

“I’m influenced by the 81 verses of the Tao Te Ching,” Otto said. “It teaches that a good artist is the embodiment of light. Also, to not waste anything. I recycle and repurpose. To never lose touch with who we really are and just stay at the ‘center of the circle’ and let all things take their course. To trust, To do, then let go, to be formless and perfect. To know yourself is true wisdom.”

Damaged things

Time to let go. Be honest about what damaged things are and recycle them into treasure. They probably will have more value in your treasured art work than trash.

An abandoned hobby

Be realistic about which hobbies you've moved on from and recycle the related materials you're not using into Now. Allowing the new art work to count as a really creative  MINDSET SHIFT into treasure.

Stuff you never use

This often includes things like random empty frames, empty containers,  junk drawer items, knickknacks, freebies or gifts you were given but don't like.

Extras/duplicates

Items that fall into this category, can include coffee cups, measuring cups and spoons, wooden spoons, wire whisks, handbags, sunglasses and pens.

Bring some Trash to turn into Treasure!

About the Instructor

McKay Otto

McKay Otto earned his B.A from UT Austin and scholarships from the MFA Houston Glassell school of Art. His work is inspired by light and its reflections in and around us. McKay continues to investigate the painting /sculpture processes using various acrylic materials. These experiences have led him to create his signature translucent canvas that moves beyond the traditional flat two-dimensional surface. His most notable innovative approach to painting/sculpture resulted in creating multiple dimensions with the illusion of movement. McKay’s work has been included in group museum exhibitions, as well as numerous solo exhibitions in galleries and art centers. In 2022 he was named Innovative Artist of the year at The Delaplaine Art Center in Frederick, Maryland. Currently he is working on an exhibition “Ever Legacies Ever’ opening in October 2023 in the HEB gallery at the new Rockport Art Center. McKay has been selected for a second year as one of the artists for Houston Art Alliance’s ‘Add on Art’ - also in October. His work is represented in numerous private and public collections.
